… on Body Positivity

The road to body positivity is a long and trying one. Though I am writing from the perspective of a woman, there is no doubt that this issue affects all. This issue has been on my heart lately, as it’s something I’ve struggled with for many years. Do I have all the answers? Certainly not. But I’ve gained some wisdom on the subject through a long cycle of trial and error, and I’ve comprised some advice.

Be Patient– If you’re not physically in the shape you’d like to be in, be patient with yourself. Continue to work hard, but don’t allow yourself to become discouraged. Changing your body composition is a difficult journey, but with diligence and hard work will happen in due time.

Be Positive– It’s very easy to put yourself down, but being frustrated with where you are isn’t going to help you get where you want to be. Keep the passion and desire to better yourself, but lose the negativity, anger, and frustration.

Be Smart– Keep your health as your top priority. Don’t try any “fad diets”, or deprive yourself of nutrients that you know your body needs. Make smart and healthy lifestyle changes instead of drastic temporary changes.

Be Realistic– Set realistic expectations and goals for yourself. Don’t expect to shed weight or build muscle overnight. Change takes time, hard work, and persistence.

Be Happy– This one takes precedence over all: If you’re not happy, don’t even bother. Your happiness should come first before all else. Don’t ever lose weight because someone tells you to- only do it if it’s what you want to do for the purpose of improving your health.

Being comfortable in your own skin is way harder than it sounds. We, humans, are our own worst critics, notorious for picking out each and every little flaw we have to offer. However, it’s important to recognize that each of us was wonderfully made, and we should work hard at recognizing and celebrating our individual beauty and self-worth.
Always remember: Nothing good comes from putting yourself down. Nothing. Show yourself love in the ups and downs. Show yourself love during the steps forward and steps back. The one and only person you’re stuck with forever is you, so begin working on your healthy relationship with yourself now. Investing in self-love and respect is arguably one of the best investments you’ll ever make.

One final tip: Make a conscious effort to reflect on one thing you really like about yourself each night before you go to bed and one thing you’d like to positively work on each morning. Being mindful is key when initiating change.
