… on Optimism

Optimism is sometimes a controversial mindset; many self-proclaimed “realists” argue that an optimistic mindset is synonymous with naiveness. However, as a proud optimist, I’d like to provide an argument in favor of adopting this joyous mindset. Being an optimist isn’t about being ignorant. People often assume my cheerful demeanor is a result of ignorance towards certain subjects, events, and situations. In being optimistic, it is important not to ignore the negativity that we face in life, but rather to find the positivity that is prevalent (although sometimes hidden) in every situation.

As a point of clarification, I am not attempting to criticize those who possess a different mindset than my own. I’m simply hoping to explain the benefits of adopting an optimistic outlook by explaining how it’s benefited me in my life. I have certainly been through my fair share of tough times, and during many of those times, I found it hard to stay positive. After all, when everything’s beginning to look wrong it can be hard to see what’s right. However, I’ve come to learn that even in the darkest of times there is always a light at the end of the tunnel.

My advice to any would be to focus on what you have. I guarantee you have countless overlooked blessings in your life that are always there, but not always acknowledged. For example, I like to begin by recognizing that I am indeed alive and breathing. Next, I generally give thanks for the food in my stomach, the roof over my head, and the knowledge I have gained. I try to be mindful of the fact I have a body that functions properly, and people in my life who love and care about me. This never fails to bring a smile to my face when times get tough.

Let’s face it: life can be rough. I’ve experienced deaths of those whom I love. I’ve been down to mere cents left in my bank account. I know what it’s like to be overworked, stressed, and utterly burnt out. In the midst of it all, it’s beneficial to realize that you always have something, even when you feel like you have nothing. That something may be shelter, a single person whom you trust, or even simply the air in your lungs. But it’s still something good to focus on.

When times get tough, my advice to you is to focus on what you have, but never lose sight of where you want to be. Recognize the blessings in your life, but if you’re not where you need to be financially, emotionally, physically, or even spiritually, do something to change it. You may not see immediate results, but with continued small steps towards a goal and a positive mindset coupled with a true belief in yourself, there’s very little you won’t be able to accomplish.

“One of the things I learned the hard way was that it doesn’t pay to get discouraged. Keeping busy and making optimism a way of life can restore your faith in yourself.”
