Independence day is here! July 4th, 1776, the original thirteen colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence and declared themselves a new nation free from Britain’s control: The United States of America. Nowadays to commemorate this noteworthy moment in our nation’s history, most citizens partake in a wide array of festivities. Commonly seen are barbecues, block parties, parades, and fireworks shows, all ways families come together to spend quality time for this federal holiday.
I love holidays. I’m an extremely festive person, and will gladly celebrate for any occasion. The 4th of July is no exception, and I’ve compiled a list of my favorite activities from my childhood to present that my family, friends, and I have used to celebrate this patriotic holiday.
Bike Rides– There’s nothing like a nice long family bike ride to get your spirits high, and the Fourth is a beautiful day for one. My family and I would buy streamers and other fun decorations to deck out our bikes before parading around the neighborhood proudly and loudly.
Cook Off– How about a little friendly competition? A great idea to celebrate is with a cook-off or bake-off. A chili cook off is always a hit, and you can’t go wrong with a festive cake baking competition.
Barbecue– A barbecue is a fun way to host a gathering of family and friends. Grill up some burgers and hot dogs, and enjoy a day of mingling and celebration.
Lawn Games– Find a large grassy area, and break out the games! Play some disc golf, football, soccer, grass volleyball, anything that gets the blood pumping and the endorphins flowing.
Pool Party– I don’t know where y’all are from, but where I’m from the Fourth of July is almost always a hot one. Grab your favorite swimsuit and hit the water, a super fun way to stay cool.
Beach Day– If you live by a beach, even better! Grab some friends, family, an umbrella, and a cooler, and have a fun gathering down by the water.
Fireworks Show– If it’s legal in your area, find a fireworks stand and invest in a cool fireworks display! Setting off fireworks in the street has been a favorite activity among my friends and I for years.
No matter what you decide to do this fourth of July, make sure you do it in the company of those whom you love. I’ll also leave you with a few of my favorite rules for the day: Forget about work. If its edible, eat it. If it’s a firework, light it. If it’s red, white, or blue, wear it. If an American flag can be stuck to it, stick on on. And if you have the opportunity to make someone’s day brighter, do it. Take this opportunity to be festive and show your love for this beautiful nation that we are so blessed to live in. Be smart and stay safe, but let loose and have a good time with the people who matter most to you. Happy Fourth!
